Sriperumbudur Sanskrit College  A small Patashala with 12 students commenced teaching around the year 1870. This emerged as the Ubhaya Vedanta Vardhini alias Sriperumbudur Sanskrit College in 1890 with Sri Singam Chetty Ateendrooloo Chetty as the first President of the college committee. He graciously donated the entire amount for purchasing land and putting up an impressive structure to house the college.

To quote Sri Anna N. Subramanian former President, Vivekananda College, “The Sriperumbudur Sanskrit College which is aptly known as Ubhaya Vedanta Vardhini and which preserves and propogates our spiritual heritage through Sanskrit as well as Tamil is rendering inestimable service to the cause of our ancient culture. Even a little of such devoted service will save us from the onslaught of materialism and spirit of disunity which threatens the country today.”

In the year 1891-92 this institution was granted recognition by the Government and commenced conducting courses such as Vykarna Siromani and Nyaya Siromani. Subsequently  the institution applied to the University of Madras for affiliation in the Siromani courses of the Oriental Titles Examination and obtained it. Thereby the colllege emerged as as a place for post siromani courses of study and research. The college has been recognised as a suitable institution for post graduate research in Nyaya. From 1922 a free boarding house for poor students was run. The alumni of this college has won laurels in the Vidwat parishads held in Mysore, Pudukottah, Vanaparthi and Gadwal and the Veda Vedanta Vardhini Trilplicane. Several have secured places as pandits in schools and colleges and some have started sister institutions to propogate Ubhaya Vedanta. The college opened Vedam courses in 1971. In 1951 the college opened Tamil Vidwan couses. Towards the goal of spreading enlightenment in the light of our great traditions the college has now undertaken a programme for Sanskrit propogation to equip the next generation with the required foundation to be able to access the great scriptures of our land
