Sri Singam Chetty Ateendrooloo Chetty Garu
He was born in the year Dhanthu, on Ekadasai day in the month of magha, under the star poorvashadha at Srirangapatnam in the province of mysore. His father Vakulabharanam Chetty came down from Srirangapatnam and settled at George Town. He was employed as cash keeper at the female Orphan Asylum. The marriage of Sri SingamChetty was unique in itself. A gentlemen by the name of MumidyChetty Swami Chetty settled the marriage of his daughter to one Vysia boy and while he was been taken in procession before the marriage ,the creditors of the boy prevented the procession and took him to Civil jail. SwamyChetty became naturally very much dejected but decided to celebrate the marriage at the specified time. It was suggested to him that he should give his daughter to Sri AttendroolooChettyGaru and the marriage was celebrated at the specified Muhoortham.
After the death of his father Vakulabharanam Chetty, he became a cash keeper on a salary of Rs. 20/- a month. But after some time he left the job and decided to run a business and began to deal in yarn, salt, bullion and other materials and amassed a fortune. He had two children but both of them predeceased him. His brothers too did not have any issues. He was bringing up his sister’s sons but both of them died without children. He was averse to adoption and decided to convert his properties into a charitable trust. He set apart 4 lakhs of rupees worth of landed properties, G.P Notes etc. .,as an endowment. This venerable gentleman while alive made several presents in the shape of jewels and vahanams to temples, organized poor feeding and several other charities. Amongst the various charities Sanskrit education also received support. He allotted a sum of Rs.950/- for the Sanskrit college at Sriperumbudur to be paid every year. In almost all important places he had erected choultries for the use of srivaishnavas of the three classes. On or about the 28th June 1899, he appointed 9 trustees to administer his estate and the trustees are very much interested in improving the charities on all sides. They have contributed nearly Rs.1000/- for putting up a second storey in the premises of the college. The building itself was purchased and given for its use by singamchettyateendrooloochettyGaru during his life time.This venerable gentlemen attained paramapadam on Wednesday the 9th of August 1899,in the year vikari. |
